Not to sound like a tv commercial, but frankincense oil is awesome. It worked a miracle on a very very stuborn wart that I had on my index finger when I was younger. I went through tons of Compound W with no results. I tried the drops, the medicated bandages, and the freezing kits. Nothing. I went to the doctor and had it freezed multiple times. Nothing. I even had it surgically cut out of my finger; I literally had a crater in the meaty part of my finger. Still, the stuborn thing grew back. I even tried suffocating it with duct tape. Nothing. Then my aunt gave me a bottle of frankincense oil. I applied it full strength directly onto the wart every night before bed after I showered. That wart dissapeared after a few days, no kidding. The wart has never come back, although I do have scar tissue on that spot. That is not from the oil, it is from all the other extreme treatments that I did and from the size of the wart. I would definately recommend this product for wart removal. I bet this would also work on acne.

I have found Now products to be comparable in quality to many more expensive brands and this is true of their sandalwood blend, as well. Intelligently, Now chose grapeseed oil as the carrier. Rationale: grapeseed does not "go rancid" as many other carriers will and does not modify the sandalwood fragrance in any way (other than the expected dilution).

I find it interesting that, having used many different Sandalwood oils, both in Essential and dilute form and in high-end colognes, this is the only one that does not acquire a bit of "fishy" quality on my skin. It smells wonderful when applied and continues to smell wonderful. It has a lasting quality and does not fade for many hours.

What can be said about true, finest sandalwood that isn't known? The nose cannot be fooled, nor can the senses. There is an immediate warmth and comfort that arises from smelling the fragrance. It borders on being downright delicious to those who know and love it. This is the signature that cannot be synthesized.

We have used Balsam of Peru / Peruvian Balsam in our family for over 50 years. This sap will pull infection out of a cut or scrape, it pulls the sting out of insect bites and relieves itches. When I got this bottle I used it on some spider bites I had gotten and true to history, it provided relief.

My old bottle of Balsam of Peru had dark brown sap in it that would stain anything it came in contact with. We had to always use a bandage with it.

I preferred this new product because the sap is nearly clear and was not as thick in consistency. I like it so much better. I was able to apply it to my bites and not worry about ruining my new sheets.

This stuff is close to a miracle sap. Everyone should have some in their medicine cabinet.

I use Manuka Oil to clean, numb and quickly heal minor wounds as well as a spot treatment for adult acne and fungal infections. The oil is amazingly effective at treating these problems; I had results in less than 12 hours! It's got a strong medicinal smell but for results like these who cares? If you find direct application of the oil too strong for some reason, you can try diluting it by placing just a few drops in a little water and/or witch hazel, mixing, and then dabbing it on the area to be treated with a clean cloth. You should still get good results with the diluted version but mine were not as dramatic as from direct application of the oil. I only tried the diluted version because some sites say using the oil directly is not recommended. However, once I switched to direct application, my results got much better much faster. I can literally say Manuka Oil changed my life for the better.

You may also want to try Manuka Honey UMF 15+ or 20+ for treating wounds or acne and (when eaten) to boost your immune system as well as coat your gastro-intestinal tract (when taken about 20 minutes before meals) if you suffer from IBS or other gut/stomach upset. I started taking Flax Oil for a number of reasons. A chiropractor friend suggested I take it for joint inflammation, and in researching the product, I found out it has other benefits as well. Since starting Flax, my joint pain is no longer significant, I have dropped 3-5 points in my diastolic blood pressure, and my total cholesterol and LDL are significantly lower. I surely cannot attribute all these positive benefits to flax oil alone, as I have instituted other dietary and exercise protocols as well. However, my research indicates that flax oil benefits all the conditions I mentioned. After several bottles of Barlean's Flax Oil, I switched to Swanson's brand of Flax Oil due to the lower cost. I did not notice any difference in efficacy between the two brands. Some claim that Swanson's has a bitter taste to it. Since I mix mine in with salad oil dressing, any flax taste is masked by the dressing.

Flax is a plant. The seeds in the flax plant are filled with flaxseed oil, (sometimes called linseed oil). The seeds contain fatty oils called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and linoleic acid. ALA is the omega-3 oil in flaxseed. Flaxseed contains both omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids. Flaxseed is nature's richest storehouse of omega-3 fatty acids, and contains more than twice as much omega-3 oil as fish oils, and it costs less , ounce for ounce. Agadir Argan Oil Treatment

This Argan hair oil is nothing short of amazing. I'm a product junkie with thick/frizzy hair, and have NEVER experienced a hair product like this before. I have tried this formula both ways: on wet and on dry hair. Using it on dry hair gives it a bit of a shine...and even a little body. In fact, up until yesterday the results I achieved by putting it on my dry hair weren't even worth me leaving a review.

Yesterday, I tried something different. I put a little bit (a dime size) in the palm of my hand both when I shampooed and conditioned my hair. I let the conditioner/argan oil set in my hair for about 10 minutes (also combed it through the ends). It instantly changed the texture...felt like silk as I rinsed it out. Combed it straight, sat under the dryer for 30 min. After that I put a dime size in before blow drying it (no other products) for about 8-10 minutues tops (the technique of blow drying isn't to dry it....but the blow dryer infuses the oil even more into the hair strands while straightening it a bit). Use a high speed hand-held blow dryer that'll protect the hair (I use a Pibbs...see my review).

Then I flat ironed it (with my FHI flat iron)...and oh my God, I achieved the same bouncy, shiny, soft, no frizzes, smell good hair effect I would have had if I'd visited my salon. I now know my hairdresser's secret...they put this stuff in their shampoo (not a lot) and it makes an incredible difference. I could tell my husband loved it as well. At work today, I've received a ton of compliments from co-workers. Now, I can do my own hair and look fabulous until my next salon visit.

Disadvantages: None. It smells great (for days), a lot goes a long way, makes your hair healthy, protects it from heat, a fantastic leave-in, a great conditioner, doesn't leave a build-up (I use it everyday), isn't oily/greasy (it's fully absorbed by the hair strands)...so if you're looking for a wet-look shine..this isn't it. The hair absorbs it, and shines from within..sort of like a healthy glow.

This is one of the very few products that is well worth the price tag. My little bottle has lasted me three months...and I haven't even used half of it (I've used it everyday too - dime size daily usage). Review from amazon.com.

I am a physician. I was on lipitor for about 4 years until I found out it was giving me rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown). The manufacturers of statins state that this is a rare side effect and I even counselled my patients that this is about a 1/200 incidence. Well after delving into the research a bit more it turns out that pretty much everyone taking statins has some degree of muscle pathology on biopsy, with the majority being subclinical...but not insignificant. Being a work-out nut this could not be tolerated.

I stopped the Lipitor and went on a low fat diet (20% fat) with Mega Red. To be fair I am also taking a proprietary 3-6-9 omega oil blend as well (Udo's Blend) although it is not clear that this affects cholesterol levels and makes no claims to. I have been on the Mega Red for about 2 months and the low fat diet for about 2 weeks and got my levels rechecked. Total cholesterol went from 240 (pre-lipitor) to 179. LDL from 160 to 119 and HDL from 35 to 40. All as good or better than I got on 20 mg of Lipitor.

Now I no longer have to worry about muscle breakdown and my LFT's are normal for the first time in 4 years. As an added bonus I can get this locally for about $27 for a 4-month supply (with coupon and buy-1-get-1 deals) which is about 1/4 the cost of Lipitor. Well this is one anecdotal success story so take it for what it's worth. I have put a lot of energy into exercizing and going low fat as well so under those circumstances I can say that it seems to work for me andI am very happy with the results.

Aromatherapy is the art and science of using essential oils for improving or Greek, Roman, Chinese, and Indian have used aromatherapy to maintain health and beauty. All ancient civilizations - Egyptian, for their physical and mental well-being.

The term "Aromatherapy" can be misleading as it suggests that it is a form of healing that works exclusively through the sense of smell. This is not the case, as each essential oil has an individual combination of constituents that interact with the body's chemistry in a direct manner. It is important to recognize that essential oils have three distinct modes of action with regard to how they interrelate with the human body: pharmacological, physiological and psychological.

The pharmacological effect is concerned with the chemical changes that take place when an essential oil enters the blood stream and brain and reacts with hormones and enzymes etc.; the physiological mode is the way the essential oil affects the system of the body, that is, whether they are sedated or stimulated; the psychological effect takes place in response to the smell of the essential oil with the limbic (memory/emotion) part of the brain.

For Aromatherapy to be effective, essential oils need to enter the body in one of two ways; one, physically through the skin and secondly through the olfactory system. Once the essential oils come into contact with the skin they are immediately assimilated into the circulatory system where they are carried to the various systems and organs.

When essential oils are inhaled, their unique molecules penetrate the limbic system in the brain. The limbic system, sometimes referred to as our "old" brain, is responsible for our memories and emotions. The brain, in turn, releases certain neurochemicals, causing positive changes throughout the body. It is best to use essential oils as external remedies only. This is due to the high concentration of the essential oils and the potential irritation or damage they could cause to the mucous membranes and delicate stomach lining.

Essential oils are non-oily aromatic liquids occurring naturally in various parts of plants, herbs, flowers, fruits, woods and spices. They contain the life force of the plant and have the ability to strengthen our immune system and to stimulate our bodies' natural healing abilities.

Like herbalism, Aromatherapy draws on the healing powers of the plant world. However, instead of using the whole plant, it employs only it's essential oil.

This potent, aromatic substance is housed in the tiny glands on the outside or deep inside the roots, woods, leaves, fruits or flowers of the plant. Most plants contain essential oils, but often in such minimal amounts that extraction would not be worth the effort or the price of the essential oil would be too high.

Essential oils are highly concentrated and in most cases must be diluted prior to use. Such concentration has some advantages. For example, essential oils don't take up much room and can be easily transported. They can be combined with each other in a variety of ways for many different purposes.

Essential Oils:

Essential oils should be labeled "Pure Essential Oils". There is a temptation by distillers and suppliers of essential oils to extend or stretch the essential oil. This greatly reduces or negates the therapeutic value of the essential oil, depending on what it has been extended with.

Essential oils will vary in price, depending on the amount of plant material required, the extraction process and the availability of the plant from which the essential oil is extracted. They should always be kept in dark glass bottles as they are extremely sensitive to light. The shelf life of essential oils varies.

A citrus essential oil has the shortest shelf life of approximately one year, after which it will gradually lose its therapeutic actions. Some essential oils, such as rose, sandalwood, rosewood and patchouli actually get better with age, much like fine wine.

There are hundreds of essential oils, which between them constitute an extremely effective medical system. Many of these are the active ingredient in drugs prescribed by the orthodox Western system of medicine, or the inspiration for synthetic copies. These concentrated liquids are indispensable to medicine, and to the food and cosmetic industries.

Some examples of the disinfectant properties of essential oils:

The essential oil of cinnamon kills the Typhus bacillus at a dilution of 1:300

The essential oil of chamomile has considerable bacteriostatic properties due to the amount of azulene contained in it. Azulene is effective at a dilution of 1:2000 against the Staphylococcus and thehemolyticbeta streptococcus (causes scarlet fever and rheumatic fever).

Infected wounds have been healed using a dilution of 1:17000.

The essential oil of lemon neutralizes Meningococcus , Typhus bacillus , Pneumococcus and Staphylococcus within 5 - 20 minutes.

In order to kill bacteria in the air, Professor Griffon carried out the following experiment: Mixtures of various essential oils were sprayed as mists in a room. The development capacity of the germs suspended in the air was studied before and after spraying. Before the test there were 210 germs, of which 12 were molds and 8 staphylococci. Within 30 minutes, the essential oils had destroyed all the molds and staphylococci.

Essential Oils - 3 Types of Dermal Toxicity That Everyone Should Know About

What constitutes a dermal or skin reaction to essential oils? There are actually three types of dermal toxicity: irritation, sensitization and phototoxicity. All three are considered forms of dermal toxicity that every aromatherpist as well as lay users of essential oils should know about and recognize. Here is a brief description of each.

Irritation

Reactions come from compounds in an essential oil that react with cellular components of skin resulting in a reddening of the skin in varying degrees. This reddening of the skin occurs almost immediately. Oils that can cause skin irritation include phenols found in oregano, savory, thyme, and clove, or an aromatic aldehyde found in cinnamon, and cassia. The reaction is usually heat and burning and is not an allergic reaction. It comes from too much oil in a given skin area. It can also be caused by adulterated oils. Treatment for skin irritation is an immediate dilution with a carrier oil to quench it. This usually takes care of the redness and burning.

Sensitization

In sensitization, compounds within an essential oil cause an activation of the immune system. The result is a contact dermatitis. At the first exposure, usually nothing happens. In subsequent exposures, reactions occur. Reactions can be in the form of a rash, sneezing, shortness of breath or hives. Fragrance allergy is the most common cause of cosmetic contact dermatitis. The most sensitizing component of commonly used essential oils is cinnamic aldehyde from cinnamon oil. Eugenol in clove oil is also sensitizing. Other essential oils that pose a lesser risk include tea tree, lemongrass and ylang ylang. It is important to remember that any concentration of an oil may sensitize skin in a person with a genetic pre-disposition. Allergic reactions such as this usually develop in people who already manifest allergic reactions of one kind or another-asthma, eczema, and nasal allergies. How would you treat a skin sensitization reaction? You might try one of the anti-inflammatory essential oils like Roman chamomile or lavender in a 10% dilution.

If someone knows they have sensitive skin, a patch test should be done first. Dilute the essential oil to double the concentration to be used and put it on an adhesive bandage. Place the bandage on the person's forearm and leave in place for 12-24 hours to assess any adverse reactions.

Some causes of sensitization:

• Adulterants in an oil

• Some reactions can take years to build up

• Taking several medications at the same time may show a sensitivity to essential oils

• Sometimes a mixture of a chemical and an essential oil can trigger an allergic reaction (for example spraying the garden with a pesticide then using an essential oil on the skin)

• Interaction of the essential oil with residues of synthetic, petroleum-based personal care products-Compounds found in hand creams, mouthwashes, shampoos, antiperspirants, after-shave lotions and hair care products

Phototoxicity

Phototoxicity is an interaction between a component in an essential oil, the skin, and ultraviolet photons resulting in a skin reaction. These reactions can vary from pigmentation of the skin to severe full-thickness burns. The most common phototoxic agents are psoralens and furanocoumarins. Their chemical structure absorbs the energy from UV rays (sunlight or tanning beds) and then releases the energy in a burst to surrounding skin cells resulting in brown spots or burns. Usually keeping away from the sun for 12 hours after application is sufficient to prevent these reactions. It is sometimes said that all citrus oils are phototoxic, but this not true. When the citrus oils are steam distilled, none are photo-toxic. However, distilled citrus oils are rarely used in aromatherapy because they are less aromatic and don't have the same therapeutic qualities as the expressed citrus oils do. The steam distilled citrus oils are mainly used for flavorings.

The common essential oils considered phototoxic include: bergamot, lime, bitter orange, lemon, rue, angelica root, petitgrain, rue and grapefruit. Some authorities also include lemongrass, cumin, fennel, anise, and verbena absolute on the list. The bottom of the feet is one of the safest and most effective places to use essential oils. According to Tisserand and Balacs in Essential Oil Safety, the expressed oils of mandarin, sweet orange, tangelo and tangerine are not phototoxic. This is due to the quenching effects of other compounds, especially sesquiterpenes that make the unruly furanocoumarins behave. Myrrh is a perfect example. It contains at least ten types of furanoid compound (20-27%)-more than any other oil, yet it is not phototoxic. In ancient times, they actually used myrrh oil on the skin daily without sunburn reactions.

It protects for years. Linseed oil can be applied over nearly all finishes. If the wood is really ragged, you may want to sand lightly or wipe down with 000 or 0000 grade steel wool. Then just apply the Linseed Oil, let soak, and wipe of the excess.

Linseed Oil is best applied to one section at a time. The temperature should be warm but not hot. Too hot of a temperature will have it dry to quickly and unevenly. You want to let it soak until most of the liquid oil penetrates the wood. If it penetrates quickly, reapply more. After a few minutes, before it starts thickening, simply wipe off any excess.

The beauty of linseed oil is that it produces a protective finish from the inside out. It is not just a light coating that will quickly dissipate with exposure to the elements. We have a family heirloom, an old branding table that has sat outside in the weather on my husband's mother's ranch for over 25 years. The old Arts and Crafts worktable had deep cracks and was gray with age and exposure.

Last summer we applied several coats of finish without sanding (Its rustic after all). The table's splits are much less noticeable; the color is a mixture of dark and gold. It is ready to stand years more of exposure in our Northwest moisture without damage.

Whether you have a worn fence with a coat of stain, a cedar or other wood shed that has darkened and dried with age and element exposure, linseed oil will revitalize it. Garden tool handles (wood), wood patio furniture, you name it, this fine old tried and true product will revitalize it.

Important, Important: Always dispose of your rags or applicators in a sealed container or soak them in water before disposing of. Linseed oil like other oils is highly flammable.

We used Linseed Oil for over 25 years in antique furniture restoration to restore life and essential oils back into antique wood furniture. When my kids were younger they would help me apply linseed oil to the furniture. My teenage son stuck a rag he was using to wipe off excess oil in his pocket. In only a few minutes, he happened to turn around and I was shocked to see smoke spiraling up out of the back of his pants! So take heed, any oil is highly flammable. Take the simple proper precautions.

Unfortunately, the answer usually means prescriptions of pills and ointments. However, nature has already provided essential oils for skin diseases and other maladies.

A simple definition of essential oils does not literally mean it is paramount to improved health. Actually, it is the natural product extracted from plants. Then the oil is used in perfumes, flavorings, and medicinal purposes.

According to Wikipedia, "Various essential oils have been used medicinally at different periods in history. Medical applications proposed by those who sell medicinal oils range from skin treatments to remedies for cancer, and are often based on historical use of these oils for these purposes. . ."

So, essential oils have been around for a long time. People have used the natural qualities of various plants in nature for a long time. But, nature got shoved aside when modern medicine took over. Tired of all the internal and external chemicals needed for symptom relief, the gift of essential oils for skin diseases is being rediscovered, as more physicians strive to find alternative remedies to illnesses and their symptoms.

Although the list is quite lengthy, consider some of the following examples and how they can naturally help individuals who suffer from the discomforts of various skin diseases:

§ Benzoin oil - also known as Friar's Balsam is used for dermatitis and cracked skin. Taken from the resin of the benzoin tree in Southeast Asia, the substance is solvent extracted.

For dry and cracked skin, combine a teaspoon of jojoba oil, 2 drops of sandalwood oil, and 2 drops of benzoin oil. Roman camomile can be used to soothe allergic reactions, dry and itchy skin, dermatitis, eczema, rashes, and wounds. Similarly, German camomile oil helps flaky skin problems like psoriasis, calms allergy symptoms, eczema, dry skin, redness and irritation. In addition, German camomile is touted as a great tissue regenerator.

§ Tea tree oil - the dermatological uses for tea tree oil are numerous. The oil may be used for scrapes and minor cuts. It also soothes the skin after shaving or waxing. Both acne and athlete's foot can be helped, so its uses for the skin are basically head to toe. Minor burns and chapped lips are soothed. The list goes on for more skin problems and other ailments as well.

§ Mastic oil - comes from the resin of an evergreen shrub or small tree related to the pistachio tree. Its antiseptic properties are used for skin and hair care. The natural remedy is said to help acne, eczema and wounds.

In summary, this list is only a small example of the essential oils that claim to treat the skin for various maladies. The main point is the return of natural treatments as opposed to prescriptions or over-the-counter solutions to dermatological issues. Essential oils are fundamental ingredients in hair care products. From sage to thyme and fenugreek, essential oil extracts developed from organic and natural sources, help to soothe the scalp, while promoting hair growth, moisturizing and adding body and manageability. Let's take a look at the more common essential oils for hair products.

Basil: Basil promotes growth by stimulating circulation and works well with fenugreek and ivy burdock herbs as well. Basil is used in many shampoos and conditioners that are designed for scalp health. Each shampoo that uses basil is designed to nurture the scalp while enhancing circulation to the root of the hair which brings much needed blood flow.

Be very careful to only use lemon on hair that is too oily as this can seriously dry out the hair after just one washing or rinse.

Myrrh: Myrrh is not typically used in hair care products. If it is then Myrrh is typically used for those have greasy hair and those that want a more purified scalp. It is used in very small quantities.

Peppermint: Peppermint helps to stimulate blood flow to the root of the hair. This helps the hair to receive proper nourishment and to grow correctly. It is a great for hair that is growing slow or hair that is thinning. Peppermint makes the scalp tingle and this is what stimulates the blood flow to the hair. This stimulation can help with hair loss and thinning hair in women and men.

Rose Essential Oil: We love the smell of Rose and love the way that it feels in the hair but the only problem with rose for hair products like shampoo is that it costs a lot of money for rose essential oil.

Sage is one of the best scalp clarifiers that is available from both natural and un-natural sources. It is one of the most effective oils to develop a dandruff shampoo.

Clary Sage native to southern Europe, but cultivated worldwide, esp. the Mediterranean region, is a stout biennial or perennial herb up to 1 meter high with large, hairy leaves, green with a hint of purple, and small blue flowers. The oil is obtained by steam distillation from the flowering tops and leaves. Though employed in ancient times and in the Middle Ages for its curative properties, it seems to have fallen into disuse as a medicinal plant, though revived to a certain extent towards the end of the nineteenth century. The English name Clary originates in the Latin specific name sclarea, a word derived from clarus (clear). This name Clary was gradually modified into 'Clear Eye,' one of the popular names and generally explained from the fact that the seeds have been employed for clearing the sight, being so mucilaginous that a decoction from them placed in the eye would 'clear' it from any small foreign body, the presence of which might have caused irritation.

Historically, clary sage has been highly esteemed and used for digestive disorders, kidney disease, uterine and menstrual complaints, acne, boils, dandruff, hair loss, oily skin, wrinkles, and general nerve tonic. The oil and absolute are used as fragrance components and fixatives in soaps, detergents, cosmetics and perfumes. It has mostly been employed in disordered states of the digestion, and has also proved useful in kidney diseases.

Clary sage blends well with: juniper, lavender, cilantro, pine, carsomon, geranium, sandlewood, jasmine, frankincense, and citrus oils. It is nontoxic, nonirritant and no sensitizing so it does not cause irritation when used in shampoos or skin care products.

Tea Tree Oil: Works daily to get to the heart of dandruff other scalp conditions that can be helped with Tea Tree oil as it works to purify the scalp. It is often included with Jojoba oil for hair as the two are used to deep cleanse the scalp. Tea tree oil works extremely good for those that suffer from scalp psoriasis and scalp dandruff.

Thyme essential oils and herbs for great hair! Thyme is often used is deep cleansing shampoo and works well when used with even the mildest cleansing agents. It works well when combined with other anti oily scalp products such as Thyme and sage. Yling Ylang can be combined with herbs as well for a desired anti dandruff shampoo.

Ylang ylang is a tall tropical tree up to 20m high with large, tender, fragrant flowers, which can be pink, mauve or yellow. The yellow flowers are considered best for the extraction of essential oil. Ylang Ylang is from the first part of the distillation process, and is considered by most to be the best. This essential oil has properties: aphrodisiac, anti-depressant, anti-infectious, antiseborrheic, antiseptic, euphoric, hypotensive, nervine, regulator, sedative (nervous), stimulant (circulatory), tonic. Historically, it has been used for cosmetic and hair care, skin diseases, to prevent fever and fight infections. Is also used to soothe insect bites. Ylang Ylang blends well with lavender, sandalwood, rosewood, jasmine, vetiver, opopanax, bergamot, mimosa, cassie and rose. It is non-toxic, non-irritant and a few cases of sensitization have been reported.

The aroma of the cinnamon essential oil that has been distilled from the bark is similar to that of cassia (Chinese Cinnamon) and it is often combined with frankincense as well as other oriental woods. However, cinnamon essential oil can cause irritation to the skin and should be handled with care. This kind of essential oil is particularly good use in aromatherapy to warm and comfort the person being treated.

Whilst the aroma produced by the oil distilled from the cinnamon leaves is more reminiscent of the smell of cloves than cinnamon because of the large amount of eugenol in it. It is often best mixed with oriental fragrances and as previously mentioned it should be handled with care as it can cause irritation to the skin. Where the essential oil from the cinnamon bark is ideal for aromatherapy where a person wants to feel warm and comfortable that distilled from the leaf seems to refresh and vitalize a person.

Wintergreen's lively, heating and cooling mentholated power gives temporary relief to the symptoms of muscular, arthritic and rheumatic aches and pains: use a nassage oil blend with a ratio of 5 drops Wintergreen to l0mL carrier oil and rub as a penetrative liniment into the affected areas.

Wintergreen blends well with oregano, mints, thyme, ylang ylang, narcissus and vanilla.

Pure oil of wintergreen can cause irritation and must be used cautiously. It is poisonous except in very small amounts if ingested. Wintergreen should never be used during pregnancy.

Several Native American tribes used wintergreen as a tea for colds and flu, and as a poultice to ease arthritis and rheumatism.

Early American settlers also recognized the value of wintergreen and included it in their kitchens as well as their medicine cabinets. They made a winter tonic of the berries blended with brandy, and their children were given the roots to chew to deter tooth decay. The colonists of the American Revolution often enjoyed wintergreen tea as an alternative to the imported tea so heavily taxed.

Early medicinal formulas using wintergreen to reduce fever, body aches, and muscular pains, were probably quite effective indeed. The active constituent found in the leaves and berries is methyl salicylate, and is closely related to salicylic acid - the forerunner of aspirin. Unlike aspirin, a moderate internal dosage of wintergreen acts as a stomachic and relieves indigestion rather than inducing it.

Wintergreen oil is still a popular addition to toothpaste, gum, candy, and root beer, although true wintergreen oil has for the most part been replaced with a synthetic version made from birch bark.

Cosmetically, wintergreen speeds the healing of skin disorders, and when added to lotions it acts as a natural softener readily absorbed by the skin. In fact, oil of wintergreen was once used to soften leather used in bookbinding. As a liniment, wintergreen is an important ingredient of the popular lotion to relieve overexerted muscles: Ben Gay.

Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Tonic, stimulant, astringent, aromatic. Useful as a diuretic and emmenagogue and for chronic mucous discharges. Is said to be a good galactogogue.'

'The oil of Gaultheria is its most important product. It has all the properties of the salicylates and therefore is most beneficial in acute rheumatism, but must be given internally in capsules, owing to its pungency, death from inflammation of the stomach having been known to result from frequent and large doses of it. It is readily absorbed by the skin, but is liable to give rise to an eruption, so it is advisable to use for external application the synthetic oil of Wintergreen, Methyl Salicylate, or oil from the bark of Betula lenta, which is almost identical with oil of Gaultheria. In this form, it is a very valuable external application for rheumatic affections in all chronic forms of joint and muscular troubles, lumbago, sciatica, etc.'

'The leaves have found use as a substitute for tea and as a flavouring for genuine tea. The berries form a winter food for animals, partridges, deer, etc. They have been used, steeped in brandy, to produce a bitter tonic taken in small quantities. The oil is a flavouring agent for tooth powders, liquid dentifrices, pastes, etc., especially if combined with menthol and eucalyptus.'

King’s 1898 Dispensatory: 'Wintergreen possesses stimulant, aromatic, and astringent properties. It is used in infusion as an astringent in chronic mucous discharges, as a diuretic in dysuria, as an emmenagogue, as a stimulant in cases of debility, and is said to augment the flow from the lactiferous vessels of nursing women, but this is doubtful. It is also recommended as a valuable remedy for articular and muscular rheumatism.'

'The volatile oil (see Oleum Gaultheriae), or its tincture, is used to render syrups and other preparations more agreeable. The oil allays the pain of carious teeth, and large doses of it administered internally have caused death by producing inflammation of the stomach; the essence of wintergreen is a carminative, and is sometimes used in the flatulent colic of infants.'

American Materia Medica, 1919 (Ellingwood): 'It is of benefit in neuralgia, tic douloureux, gonorrheal rheumatism, inflammation of the bladder, irritation of the prostate gland, dysuria, sexual excitement in male or female, spermatorrhea without impotency, acute articular rheumatism, migraine, sciatica, diabetes, diphtheria, chronic mucous discharges and toothache (locally). A liniment of the oil is useful in allaying the pain of rheumatism.'

'Asthmatic breathing of a non-paroxysmal character is relieved by this remedy, as is asthmatic cough, and cough characterized by constriction or tightness at the supra-sternal notch. In the cough of asthmatic bronchitis, or in dry, harsh, persistent bronchial or phthisical cough, this agent acts nicely.'

Sweet Basil - There are many types of basil: linalool basil, exotic basil and sweet basil. The odor of the linalool type is very green, floral-sweet and is most often used in expensive perfumes. The exotic type of basil is stronger with a hint of camphor.

Trinity's sweet basil type combines both qualities in a floral-spicy aroma with a lasting herbal sweetness. Clary sage, bergamot and lime oil work well with basil oil.

It has a beneficial action on the respiratory tract; it is often used for asthma, bronchitis and sinus infections. Basil is also effective in the case of constipation, nausea, vomiting and cramp, and also with menstrual problems.

It helps to minimize uric acid in the blood, thus relieving gout. It refreshes the skin and helps control acne.

Basil oil is a very beneficial oil and can be helpful not only for headaches and migraines, but also has an uplifting effect on depression.

It is effective in digestive disorders, ranging from nausea to hiccups and for infections in the respiratory tract. It is useful for wasp and insect bites, particularly that of mosquitoes.

In vapor therapy Basil oil can be used for migraines, headaches and concentration.

Basil oil in a warm bath could help relieve gout and muscular as well menstrual pains.

Basil oil goes particularly well with oils such as: Bergamot, Black Pepper, Cedarwood, Fennel, Ginger, Geranium, Grapefruit, Lavender, Lemon, Marjoram, Neroli and Verbena.

I bought this item to use when massaging my feet. It's not greasy and smells wonderful. Then recently I was watching 2 videos on youtube about how to get rid of stretch marks. One suggested rubbing a fresh cut lemon on it then apply almond oil. Another also suggested massaging vitamin E. I grabbed my bottle of Burt's Bee's oil and realized everything was already there. Lemon oil, Sweet Almond Oil and Vitamin E. I'm planning on using it for stretch marks. This product is wonderful so far so I'll see how it goes.
